Website Privacy Notice

Effective Date: June 7, 2024

Welcome! RENDER is the education technology innovation studio within the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (“CZI,””we,” “us,” and “our”). Our Education team of designers, engineers, and researchers work directly with teachers and administrators early and often in the product development process, incorporating their unique insights about schools to co-build impactful educational tools.

RENDER offers co-building opportunities for educators, partner organizations, and education software developers. Co-building opportunities mean research interviews; surveys; user experience research sessions; user testing of a RENDER tool; and/or other similar research or activities. Co-building opportunities can be remote or in-person. A Render tool is a digital educational product or feature under development within RENDER that may be accessed or used during a co-building opportunity.

Website Privacy Notice and its application

This Website Privacy Notice applies to visitors (“Visitor,” “you,” and “your”) to the Render website (“Website”). It describes how we collect, use, and disclose personal information about you specifically when you visit the Website, receive an email from us, or anywhere we gather information from you and refer you to this Privacy Notice.

The Website Privacy Notice supplements our Render Privacy Policy, which applies to RENDER’s co-building opportunities (including RENDER tools) and covers individuals who may be invited to participate in a co-building opportunity (“Prospective Co-Builders”) and those who agree to participate as defined in the User Agreement (Educator, Student, School Leader, and Caregiver, or collectively “Co-Builders”) (Prospective Co-Builders and Co-Builders collectively, “Participants”). Capitalized terms used but not defined have the meanings set forth in the Render User Agreement.

Most importantly, when a student is invited to a co-building opportunity (or participates via their school or caregiver), we use a cookie so we don’t use or disclose that student’s personal information for advertising purposes or to create a profile of the student’s usage of the Website. We do this in accordance with our Privacy Policy and our commitment to the Student Privacy Pledge.

Summary:

This Website Privacy Notice describes how personal information is collected, used, and disclosed when you visit the Render website. It applies to visitors of the website, email recipients, and anyone else who provides information and is referred to this notice. The notice supplements the Render Privacy Policy, which pertains to Render’s co-building opportunities.

However, for Visitors other than Students (namely, School Leaders, Educators, and Caregivers), we may use third-party advertising cookies on our Website to deliver advertising about RENDER on third-party sites, including on Other Services. Under California law, this practice is considered to be “sharing” of personal information and may also be deemed a “sale” of such information. You can opt-out of this practice by clicking the Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information link or the link provided in the footer of the website in the Render Website and turn off the toggle switch for Marketing and Social Media Cookies. Disclosing Your Data

Except in the instances listed below, we will not disclose your personal information to others unless you consent to it. For the below instances, we may disclose any of the categories of personal information described in Section 1 above.

3.1 Cookie and Similar Technology Providers

Except for Students, and as described in our Cookie policy, providers of cookies and similar technologies receive your personal information (e.g., cookie IDs, device information, and usage data) when they provide services to us.

3.2 Service Providers

CZI works with service providers that help us provide the Website by supplying services on our behalf. These services include, for example, sending emails, performing statistical analysis, database management services, database hosting, providing customer support software, and security. While providing these services, our service providers may have access to your information, including personal information.

3.3 Legal and Safety Reasons

We may disclose information if we believe in good faith that it’s necessary (a) in connection with any legal investigation; (b) to comply with relevant laws or to respond to subpoenas or warrants served on us; (c) to protect or defend our rights or property or users of our website or others; and/or (d) to investigate or assist in preventing any violation of the law.

3.4 Reorganization, Sale, or Merger

We may disclose your information in connection with a merger, reorganization, or sale of all or a portion of our organization or assets related to CZI. In the event of a merger, reorganization, or sale of assets, the buyer or other successor entity will continue to be bound by the terms of this Website Privacy Notice.

Summary:

Except for the cases listed in this section, we will not disclose your personal information without your consent. There are certain cases where we might need to disclose anonymized information with third parties — for example:

  • To allow service providers, including CZI, to provide you with Render’s website.
  • To disclose information that we believe is necessary for legal and safety reasons.

04

Your Choices Regarding Your Personal Information

We provide a variety of ways for you to control your personal information, including choices about how we use that data. In some jurisdictions, these controls and choices may be enforceable as rights under applicable law.

4.1 Access, portability, correction, and deletion
  • Access personal information. You can ask us for a copy of your personal information, including in a machine-readable form (data portability).
  • Change or correct personal information. You can also ask us to change, update, or fix inaccurate personal information in certain cases, subject to our legal obligations and lawful exceptions.
  • Delete personal information. You can ask us to erase or delete all or some of your personal information subject to our legal obligations and lawful exceptions.

To make such requests, contact privacy@buildwithrender.org. In the email, please provide us with your name, state in which you live and which of the above rights you would like to exercise. We may ask for additional information that allows us to reasonably verify that you are the person about whom we collected personal information such as the name of your school or district, or to send your request from the email address associated with your account. Please also let us know if you have questions or concerns related to exercising any rights you have under applicable law.

4.2 Object to, limit, or restrict uses of personal information
  • Communications preferences. You can opt out from communications with CZI at any time via the unsubscribe link in emails from us.
  • Targeted advertising and data sale / sharing. As described in Section 2.3 of this Website Privacy Notice, for Visitors other than those identified as Students, we may use third-party advertising cookies on our Website in order to help us deliver advertising about Render on third-party sites. Some privacy laws define data “sales” broadly to include such practices (and under California law, this practice is considered to be “sharing” of personal information). You may opt out by using the controls described in Section 2.3 above or by using a browser Global Privacy Control as described in section 4.3 below.
  • Profiling and automated decision-making. Some privacy laws provide a right to opt-out of profiling or automated processing in furtherance of decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects concerning the consumer. CZI does not engage in such profiling or automated processing.

4.3 Browser or platform controls
  • Cookie controls. Most web browsers are set to accept cookies by default. If you prefer, you can go to your browser settings to learn how to delete or reject cookies. If you choose to delete or reject cookies, this could affect certain settings or features of our website. Please see our Cookie Policy for more information.
  • Global Privacy Control. Some browsers and browser extensions support the “Global Privacy Control” or similar controls that can send a signal to the websites you visit indicating your choice to opt out from certain types of data processing, including data sales and/or targeted advertising, as specified by applicable law. When we detect such a signal, we will make reasonable efforts to respect your choices indicated by a GPC setting or similar control that is recognized by regulation or otherwise widely acknowledged as a valid opt-out preference signal.
  • Do Not Track. Some browsers include a “Do Not Track” (DNT) setting that can send a signal to the websites you visit indicating you do not wish to be tracked. Unlike the GPC described above, there is not a common understanding of how to interpret the DNT signal; therefore, our websites do not respond to browser DNT signals. Instead, you can use the range of other tools to control data collection and use, including the GPC, cookie controls, and advertising controls described above.

If you would like to appeal a CZI decision with respect to a request to exercise any of your rights, please email us at privacy@buildwithrender.org and explain the basis for your appeal.

CZI will not discriminate against you in any manner for exercising any of the above rights with respect to your personal information.

Summary:

We provide a variety of ways for you to control your personal information, including choices about how we use that data. To make such requests, contact privacy@buildwithrender.org with the appropriate details for the request. You can limit the use of your personal information, including using browser or platform controls.

  • Information about Data Collection
    • The categories of personal information that have been collected.
    • The specific pieces of personal information that have been collected about you.
    • The categories of sources from which we have collected personal information.
    • The business purpose for which we have collected personal information.
  • Information about Data Disclosure
    • The categories of personal information that we have sold, shared, or disclosed for a business purpose.
    • The categories of third parties with whom personal information has been sold, shared, or disclosed for a business purpose.

Note that general details about data collection and disclosure are provided in this Website Privacy Notice. If you wish to exercise your rights or request more specific details about the above, email privacy@buildwithrender.org and follow the instructions in Section 4.1 above.

You also have the right to request correction or deletion of your personal information under certain circumstances, subject to a number of exceptions, and to opt-out of selling or sharing of your personal information. To opt out of selling or sharing of your personal information, please follow the instructions in Section 2.3 above.

You may designate, in writing or through a power of attorney, an authorized agent to make requests on your behalf to exercise your rights under the CCPA. Before accepting such a request from an agent, we will require the agent to provide proof you have authorized it to act on your behalf, and we may need you to verify your identity directly with us. If you would like an authorized agent to make a request for you, have that agent email privacy@buildwithrender.org with the above information to us with additional information sufficient for us to verify that the authorized agent is acting on your behalf.

We may verify your request as described in Section 4.1 above. As described in Section 4.3 above, you have a right to not be discriminated against for exercising these rights set out in the CCPA.

We do not knowingly “sell” or “share” Student personal information.

5.2 Additional Disclosures/”Notice at Collection”

You have a right to receive notice of our personal information collection, use, retention, and disclosure practices at or before the collection of personal information. We have described in fuller detail in this Privacy Policy the personal information that we collect, how we use and disclose it, and how long we retain it but provide the following overview here:

  • Information we collect. We have collected the following categories of personal information within the past 12 months: (1) name and contact information; (2) device identifiers; (3) internet or other similar network activity and usage information, including cookies, pixels, and click-through URLs; (4) background information, such as employment role education information (e.g., grade and subject) ; (5) demographics; (6) inferences drawn from internet or other electronic network activity using the Render website, and (7) contents and files, for example, contents of your communications to us. See Section 1 of this Privacy Policy above for more details.
  • Purposes of collection, use, and disclosure. As described in Section 2.3 above, we do not “sell” or “share” personal information (as those terms are defined by the CCPA) of the Visitors we have identified as Students. We may use Educator data for advertising purposes in ways that could be considered “sharing” or “selling” under the CCPA. In addition, we use or disclose the personal information we collect for one or more of the business purposes described in Sections 2 and 3 above.
  • Information we disclose. We have disclosed the following categories of personal information within the past 12 months: (1) identifiers; (2) internet or other similar network activity; and (3) inferences drawn from internet or other electronic network activity.
  • Third parties to whom we disclose. We have “shared” internet or other similar network activity of educators and other non-student visitors to our Website for behavioral advertising purposes, which also may be deemed a sale of such information, within the past 12 months to advertising and social network providers. We have also disclosed the personal information we collect as described in Section 3 of this Website Privacy Notice.
  • Retention of information. We only keep personal information for as long as it’s necessary to offer Render. In certain cases, we may need to keep personal information if the law requires a different duration, or as directed by the teacher or school. Please see Section 6 below.
Summary:

California residents have a right to request information about the personal data Render collects from you. You also have a right to receive notice about how we are collecting, using, and disclosing your personal information before we do so.

06

Data Retention and Security

We retain personal data for as long as necessary to provide the services and fulfill the transactions you have requested, comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce our agreements, and for other legitimate and lawful business purposes. Because these needs can vary for different data types in the context of different services, actual retention periods can vary significantly based on criteria such as user expectations or consent, the sensitivity of the data, the availability of automated controls that enable users to delete data, and our legal or contractual obligations.

We take reasonable and appropriate steps to help protect personal data from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, alteration, and destruction.

To help us protect personal data, we request that you use a strong password and never share your password with anyone or use the same password with other sites or accounts.

07

Changes

We may modify this Website Privacy Notice from time to time. If we make material changes, including changes that impair your rights or change how your data will be used, we will provide you at least 30 days prior notice pursuant to this Section 7. We will seek to provide you notice through the website, or by other means, to provide you the opportunity to review the changes before they become effective. We agree that changes cannot be retroactive. The notice will indicate which sections contain material modifications and what choices you may have. Your continued access and use of the Render website after we publish or send a notice about our changes to these terms means that you are understand and acknowledge the updated terms following their “effective date.” If you object to any changes, you must stop using or accessing the Render website.
